The city of Fort Collins is in Larimer County in
the state of Colorado. Fort Collins is the county
seat and largest city in the county. The city was
established in 1883 and was named for William
Collins. William O. Collins was a United States
army colonel. It was a United States military fort
in 1864. There are over 130,000 people who are
residents of Fort Collins. The city sits along the
Cache la Poudre River and has forty-seven square
miles of land. Fort Collins is 4,984 feet above sea
level in elevation. A nickname for Fort Collins is
“Fort Fun.” Fort Collins is home to Colorado State University
(CSU). CSU is the largest employer in the
city. Fort Collins has nearly forty city parks
that include over twenty miles of pedestrian
and cycling trails. The city of Fort Collins
is located forty-five miles south of Cheyenne,
Wyoming and sixty miles north of Denver, Colorado and the Denver
International Airport. The city has air
service locally at the Loveland-Fort Collins
Airport. Fort Collins can be reached by car
off of north-south Interstate-25. There is one
newspaper, The “Fort Collins Coloradoan,” that
is published each day. Two other papers, the
“Fort Collins Now” and the “Rocky Mountain
Chronicle” are available each week. The
Lincoln Center on Magnolia Street, is the city
theatre and concert hall. It is home to the
Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra. The Lincoln
Center was built in 1978 and can hold over a
thousand ticket-holders. Old Town, the
historical downtown district, is a thriving
shop area. The city is governed by a
manager-city council forum. The mayor serves
over a seven-seat council. The main city
offices are located at 215 North Mason. The
Larimer County Justice Center is built at 201
La Porte Avenue in the historic downtown of
Fort Collins. The Larimer County Justice
Center was dedicated in the year 2000. The
Anheuser Busch Brewery is located just north
of Fort Collins on Interstate-25.
